A Crab and especially 2P would interest me more.  Bear in mind it was not a 2P the 4P Compound Farish introduced c  1980.  I have a Union Mills 2P which is regularly used in Cromarty.  THat will certainly do me for a long while.

Years probably decades, ago the Railway Modeller carried an article describing how to turn a Farish  Compound into a passable 2P.   I did such a conversions then sold it on when I bought a used Union Mills version.

Have no problem with an integral speaker in the tender (in every tender ) , which i dont anticipate ever using, other than the fact this is bound to up the price unnecessarily, and probably by more than the few quid you can recoup from surgically removing one...

I would expect it is done the way it is because it is actually more cost-effective to just have one production run with speaker fitted than split it into two smaller runs with and without speaker. The actual cost of a sugarcube speaker is minimal, retail including VAT just £7 from YouChoos with sound-enclosure fitted (by way of an example) so if bought in bulk as components I would suspect less than a couple of quid each for Bachmann or whoever.

Thanks Roy, thats fair and reasonable, however bells and whistles( and other sounds) tend to attract a premium beyond their physical cost because manufacturers need to make money.
Still at the end of the day we have seen some decent discounting when products dont shift in the numbers hoped for. The old  dichotomy, we want new models to do well and sell well so we get to have more new models/ versus we want them cheaper so we can actually afford another one.

Sugar cubes can be had for a couple of pounds if you shop about, especially as part of a multi pack. In bulk to a factory, their cost will be pence, especially as every model has them so there is no variation in the production line. A factory fitted speaker really doesn't add much to the price at all, but saves milling and messing about for those that do want sound. Makes sense in the the tender of a kettle since there's dead space in there beside the decoder socket too.

Whilst I tend to agree with you as I'll never have sound in my N gauge stuff, someone at base would have to make a decision how many to have with or without speakers. Should, just should, they run out of speaker fitted models then the sound lovers will be grizzling about having to fit their own. At least if I were to sell my model on said sound lover would be happy to have it

Years ago I heard it would be cheaper for car manufacturers to offer their cars with the top customisation as standard as opposed to offering all the variables so this logic would probably apply to model railways to an extent. I doubt they can offer sound chips in all (some people will still have high frequency track cleaners) so its not possible but certainly speakers is a viable standard

That'll be the next step for Bachmann and Dapol. Release RTR rolling stock at lower (ie DCC ready) prices with built in DCC control and sound, but have them locked and able to be unlocked for use by a monthly subscription.

Maerklin group - Minitrix for us N gaugers - have been shifting mostly factory fitted DCC sound models for years, unfortunately at premium prices. The same with their LGB locos.

I simply don't like or want sound for N, and don't appreciate having to pay a premium for functionality I don't want. As a consequence I've bought very little brand new Minitrix compared to other brands.
