Anyway nice to end a long week with this !

You obviously know your rock music. I would never have known it was Area Code 615 unless I clicked on your link. Or @port perran's 7 hours previously.

I was listening to a few old clips at a quiz being run whilst sat in a pub last night being honest. The Guiness ad tune they played amongst others and no wasnt taking part. One of our friends recognised it and whispered. So there

Its great everyone has tracks to remember and likes but being from a family who likes classical music and have heard plenty played as there are those in the family who are violinists or trombonists. Late Grandfather and I just ended up humming or in the workshop / garage

@acook Sorry Alan, but twice as long and half as good
Some decent geetar playing but the usual American 'How many guitarists does it take to play a simple classic?'
As for a drummer wearing gloves...............wuss!

This afternoon, in the train room, I've been listening to Soft Machine,

A band I saw twice (I think) way back but one that I've grown to appreciate more in later years.

Soft Machine, in many ways, were partly responsible for guiding my musical taste more towards a sort of prog rock/jazz fusion/improvisational flavour rather than all out traditional rock and roll guitar, bass, drum and perhaps keyboard combos.

Here they are from 1971 with Virtuality :

I'm sure I'll get used to cream first soon.

Thanks Martin @port perran . I have always thought of Soft Machine being a bit of an acquired taste almost to the point of being a bit "Marmitee". Nevertheless, some stellar musicians* passed through its ranks.

This week we lost the incomparable Quincy Jones; so, here is one of my favourite tracks of his before he produced Michael Jackson and had a few big hits of his own circa 1980.

*Mike Ratledge (keys) of Soft Machine did have a hand in writing this classic by Caravan from the album "For Girls who Grow Plump in the Night".

Thanks Tim

I'm afraid that I've never really explored Quincy Jones to any great extent.
Perhaps I should.

As for Caravan, most definitely one of my favourite Prog Rock bands of the early 70s.
I remember being blown away the first time I heard Nine Feet Underground on the John Peel Show. It is still one of my all time favourite pieces of music.
They were part of the so called "Canterbury Scene" which included, amongst others Caravan, Soft Machine, Gong, National Health and Hatfield and the North.

These bands included some very well respected and well known musicians who went on to have varied and interesting careers.

One of these was Robert Wyatt who later formed the relatively little known Matching Mole.
This is my favourite track of theirs :

Robert Wyatt's rendition of Shipbuilding is one of the most emotional pieces of music I have ever heard.

From Soft Machine, Matching Mole and Robert Wyatt to something a bit more contemporary. I saw this band a couple of months ago and was most impressed (well mostly - it was a bit too loud!) but here are Solstice with the epic "Bulbul Tarang"...

Martin @port perran might like this and @Trainfish should give it a go. Oh, there is a steam loco in the video as well!

Cheers,

Tim

Fabulous. I continue to be mightily impressed by Solstice and Andy Glass provides some entertaining facial expressions.
And I did spot the steam locomotive.
I'm sure I'll get used to cream first soon.

I have to say that was rather good. I didn't spot a kettle though.
