Hi all,

Thinking I will hopefully start building a layout this winter.  It's not going to be a final, more a test bed for ideas and locos.   I have 2 questions which would be great if you would give me the benefit of your wisdom.

1)   As it's a temporary layout – has anyone ever used pallets as baseboard, with a suitable topping and legs attached.  We get them at work and they are invariably brand new wood, very flat, true and sturdy.  I'm aware of the chemical restrictions to make sure I don't get a poisoned one – I can pick and choose the best ones. Two approx. 3ft sq and one 2ft x 6ft would fit my space (in L shape).
2)   Scale:  I have got enough rolling stock to start messing about in N gauge – mainly steam and vintage diesel.  I'm still deciding about committing to N, or moving to 00 as it seems cheaper to buy stock and I won't go blind setting it all up.  My question is – would it be feasible to have a mix of the 2 with the N gauge being a sort of Narrow gauge/heritage/miniature tourist railway to the 00 real scale. Along the lines of RH&D locos etc.  Or does it look totally stupid.
Cheers.

Welcome Phil

I'm no woodwork expert but I see no reason not to use pallets as a base.

As for mixing N and OO as you suggest would look odd.
However, 009 scale, uses N gauge track but the locos and stock are scaled down as narrow gauge versions of 00 scale so would work well.

I'm sure I'll get used to cream first soon.
