Can anyone tell me what a rake of Post Office vans might have been in the 1970s? i.e. how many POTs, how many POSs, and what other NPCSS might there have been?

Thanks
Bob

I'm not sure if you have seen rmweb or indeed any photos. Formation depended on the post office needs, route taken eg London Scotland, York Bristol, Whitehaven Huddersfield etc.

I tend to look at photos and see what is in any particular rake

Not sure, but isn't there a thread on the Forum somewhere already about Royal Mail formations? Presumably in the Real Railways thread, but don't know.

From the 1972 timetables:
19:32 Bristol to Newcastle
GUV BG BG BG CK SLC POS POT POS POT BG
(Note Mk1 CK and sleeper in formation!)

20:30 Euston to Glasgow/Aberdeen
BG BG POT POS POS POT POS POS POS POT POT BG

22:45 Euston to Carlisle
BG BG POT POS POS POS POS POS BG

19:05 Glasgow to Euston
POT POS POS POT POS POT POS POS POS POS POT POT
(no BG which is unusual!)

22:25 Paddintgon to Penzance
GUV GUV BPOT POS POT POS POS BPOT Siphon-G GUV Siphon-G

Only 40 POT (stowage) vans were built - compared to 96 sorting vans. You'd also typically only find the POT on the longer distance TPO trains. Huddersfield to Workington generally only had POS and BG.

Looking at the formations above I'd suggest BG POS POT POS BG would be a reasonable starting point, with extra vans or passenger coaches added as the mood takes you. The BR(W) train features GWR Siphon G vans so don't worry about adding pre-nationalisation stock. Thompson, Stanier or Hawksworth BG would undoubtedly be seen.

Ta muchly
Steven that's appreciated
The Workington service often connected with London/ Scotland services and was short in formation

As mick says much appreciated.
